Abstract
Objectives: This study examined the perception of 700 citizens of Ulsan on various smoking cessation policies to reduce smoking rates.

Methods: A total of 100 high school students and 600 adults who could represent Ulsan citizens participated in the survey. We confirmed the pros and cons of the following nine smoking cessation policies: 1) inserting a warning phrase in a cigarette box, 2) inserting a warning picture in a cigarette box, 3) smoking prevention education and publicity, 4) designating and expanding non-smoking area, 5) regulating cigarette advertising and sponsorship, 6) increasing cigarette tax, 7) regulating installation of cigarette store, 8) regulating installation of cigarette store, 9) providing and expanding smoking cessation support services, and 10) enforcement and expansion of non-smoking campaigns such as non-smoking ads.

Results: Among the nine types of smoking cessation policies, enforcement and expansion of non-smoking campaigns such as non-smoking ads (91.3%) were the most favored, followed by smoking prevention education and publicity (91.0%), providing and expanding smoking cessation support services (89.7%), and regulating cigarette advertising and sponsorship (84.1%). There were statistically significant differences in the opinions of smoking cessation policies according to gender, age, and smoking status among demographic factors. Particularly, smokers have a lower proportion of favorable smoking cessation policies than non-smokers.

Conclusion: Although opinions favored many smoking cessation policies, it is necessary to promote positive awareness of the smoking cessation policies by noting that smokers quit smoking as well as nonsmokers are effective in maintaining smoking cessation.
